Valganciclovir is used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of retina (retinitis) in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also used for the prevention of CMV infection in patients who have received an organ transplant from a CMV-infected donor.

How it works

Valganciclovir is an antiviral drug which belongs to class of medications called purine analogues. After oral intake, valganciclovir gets converted into ganciclovir by liver and intestinal enzymes, which then prevents the growth and spread of cytomegalovirus.

Common side effects

back pain, dizziness, muscle, chills, loss of appetite, indigestion, muscle spasms, Severe decrease in blood cells count, fungal infection of mouth, abnormal sensations of skin, inflammation of subcutaneous cells, pain, joint, nausea, unable to sleep, weakness, altered taste sensation, decrease in weight., eye pain, red and itchy skin, fever, gas, vomiting, depression, increase in blood creatinine, swelling, abnormal increase in liver enzymes, chest pain, state of having less than normal sensitivity to stimulation, ear pain, severe blood infection, kidney impairment, fatigue, cough, vitreous floaters, urinary tract infection, muscle pain, abdominal pain, difficulty in swallowing, abnormal thinking, confusion, feeling of discomfort, night sweats, fits, anxiety, headache, retinal detachment, constipation, or bone pain or stiffness
