Voltaren Suppositories (Diclofenac Sodium) work by relieving pain and inflammation. It is classified as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (abbreviated to NSAID). Patients affected by inflammatory conditions of the joints and tendons including gout attacks and arthritis have taken it to relieve pain. It is also useful for treating acute musculoskeletal pain, including inflammation of the tendons, bursitis and tenosynovitis.
Other benefits include providing relief from back pain, fractured bones and sprains. Rectal suppositories are often considered advantageous in cases where oral administration is not feasible. When placed in the back passage, they are dissolved after which the active ingredient is absorbed in the bloodstream.
This medicine exerts its pain relieving activity by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, which is due to blocking cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-1 and COX-2). Medical studies have shown that it may also have additional actions in the prevention of pain. Some experts have suggested that it might affect lipoxygenase enzymes, while also blocking the thromboxane prostanoid receptor and affecting arachidonic acid.
Voltaren Suppositories (Diclofenac Sodium) are not to be taken by mouth. Instead, they should be carefully placed into the rectum. To insert it, you will need to lie down on your side and pull the knees upwards in the direction of your chest. After this, it will be possible to push the suppository (which should already be removed from its packaging) into the rectum using your finger, pushing it up as far as possible.
Ensure that the pointed end goes in first. When you have finished inserting it, it is possible to lower your legs. It is essential that you wash your hands after administration. In all cases, your physician will determine the correct dosage. Do not exceed the dosage your physician tells you to take.
