What is Caberlin? Caberlin containing the active ingredient cabergoline is considered a dopamine receptor agonist type of medication. The medication works by reducing the amount of the hormone prolactin that is released in from the pituitary gland. High levels of the hormone in women can cause unwanted breast milk, irregular or missed menstrual periods, bone loss as well as infertility. Men with high levels of the hormone may encounter symptoms such as enlarged breasts and decreased sex drive or performance. Some people may also use it to treat Parkinson?s disease and a type of tumor of the pituitary gland called prolactinoma. How is Caberlin used? Caberlin is usually taken orally twice per week for at least 6 months unless otherwise advised by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient?s condition and their response to the therapy. Your doctor may request regular blood test to measure your prolactin levels. Adverse effects Patients using Caberlin may encounter unwanted side effects such as: Nausea Vomiting Upset stomach Constipation Dizziness or lightheadedness Headaches Breast pain Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as: Sleep disorders Painful menstrual periods Vision problems Mental or mood changes Hot flushes Fainting Decrease in urination Warnings Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives. Caberlin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems. The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider.
